At Cano Negro, the stormy weather gave us a few birds rarely if ever seen at this inland freshwater wetland complex; Laughing Gulls , a Sandwich Tern , and two Brown Pelicans ! It would be to persevere and keep watching albeit maybe from a sheltered spot with a good view of the forest, a great cup of coffee, and the best of company.

One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. Besides the boobies and the frigatebirds, several other interesting seabird species nest on Isla Isabel, including Red-billed Tropicbirds, Sooty Terns, Heerman’s Gulls, Brown Noddies and Brown Pelicans. Also present are six species of reptiles, including the numerous Brown Iguanas. .

Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is. Sergio and I continue to a sloth shelter, where, waiting for the tour, I sit in a café. He answers: “Maybe the ganja those guys are smoking makes it that strong.”.

Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. Many birders left at the first drops, but I crowded with a few other birders under the shelter of the volunteer kiosk. I was at Boy Scout Woods, one of the High Island sanctuaries owned and operated by Houston Audubon.

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. They seemed to be waiting to capitalize on any bungled attempts to snag a fish by some juvenile Brown Pelicans. The gulls, opportunistic as ever, sat in place.

It provides shelter for many songbirds and water-associated animals, including the river otter, turtles, beaver, American pelicans, ospreys, and migratory songbirds. The riparian habitat along the Sacramento River is critically important for fish, migratory birds, plants, and river system health.

The header photo shows the remains of Marlgu Billabong on November 10th 2018 looking left from the shelter. Marlgu Billabong looking right from the shelter. We soon positioned ourselves in the shelter to watch the birdlife and there was no denying it was a hot and dry day and the shade was appreciated.
