We walked along the coastal trail rather than along the promenade or beach, because that way we were sheltered from the fine drizzle that soon reached us. One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. Lastly, due to its previous inaccessibility to humans and the absence of natural predators, the wildlife is bizarrely unafraid of humans, allowing for a truly unforgettable experience. It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds.

The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. Many birders left at the first drops, but I crowded with a few other birders under the shelter of the volunteer kiosk. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. It was amazing.
