I wanted Penguins. The African Penguins (formerly known as Jackass Penguins) were pretty much a “gotcha”, but I was still tremendously excited to see them on two field trips–the Boulders colony by False Bay and at the Stony Point colony at Betty’s Bay in the Western Cape. And Sunbirds.

With 500 pages, this guide is a bit on the heavy side, but still not too much, having in mind that half of the region falls into the tropics and the edition is dealing with almost a thousand species (989 to be exact). Distribution maps show the relative abundance of a species in the region and also indicate resident or visiting status.

There are, for example, the Penguins and Diving Ducks. A flock of wanna-be Groove-billed Ani Well, not exactly like a Pink-throated Twinspot , but the colours of this Snapper do kinda remind me of one This has got to be an owl. But what owl could possibly be this gaudy. Eagle Owls are often seen hiding in small caves.

The birds were not as plentiful because we were there during the tail end of the summer when most species had already flown south. The highlight bird of the trip for me was an unexpected Northern Hawk-Owl; a bird I wanted to seed badly, but thought I did not have a chance to find one. Northern Hawk-Owl. Alaska was incredible.

I have seen two species of woodcreeper in Central America, the Ruddy Woodcreeper and Tawny-winged Woodcreeper. I have seen tens of thousands of birds in my life, and probably around two thousand species. I have no idea what species it was, but the memory is still strong. It is species A. This isn’t surprising.

By age 2 she could identify over 10 species of birds in our Johannesburg, South Africa, yard by call alone. They also have some great apps specially designed for kids like the Owl app. My youngest and a Burrowing Owl 8. My 8-year old daughter got interested in birds from a VERY early stage. And perhaps 20 others by sight.

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.
