Not so with our visit to Bosque de Apache NWR in southern New Mexico. What a stop it turned out to be, as I got two new Lifers in a matter of minutes. My first ever Gamble’s Quail were feeding right next to the picnic area, and alongside the visitors center building, I spotted a thrasher. US species – 243.

Mangrove Birds of Costa Rica

Give certain, special trees the right conditions and they also take root in the shallow mud of estuaries and other coastal situations. The trees that occur, that thrive in such places are various species of mangroves and as is typical of so many other tropical microhabitats, mangrove forests have their own suite of birds.

Kentucky: First in Crane Hunting?

Nine thousand pour into tiny Socorro, New Mexico, each November for Bosque del Apache’s Festival of the Cranes. Everywhere cranes gather, from New Mexico to Indiana to Tennessee, people come to watch them. The big gray feather in Kentucky’s cap, to my thinking, is more like a big old hole, shot right through the crown.

Glue Trapped

Like leg hold traps, glue traps are indiscriminate, with non-targeted species making up a large proportion of their catch. The Barn Swallow at right was rescued by Rebecca Dmytryk of Wildlife Emergency Services in Moss Landing, California, and transferred to Native Songbird Care and Conservation in Sebastopol.
