This is the time of year that we rightfully contemplate the noble Turkey. Thus, the cattle we raise for meat and dairy are sometimes called Bos taurus while the extinct wild form is always called Bos primigenius. They’re not the Lammergeyer – they’re not even close, as the Lammergeyer dwells alone in the genus Gypaetus – but the Egyptian Vulture and Cinereous Vulture are worthy birds in their own right. And then there’s the Griffon Vulture. Ultimately, this was the only vulture I was to see on my Spanish adventure.

One of my most vivid memories of watching The Sopranos – still the best TV series ever, in my opinion – is Tony outside barbecuing, occasionally turning the different pieces of meat. If you are in a cooperative mood, you may acknowledge the small “mane” of the male on the right side of the photo below.

The first two to three ingredients listed should be meat, and not grains or vegetable by-products. If you want to feed cooked foods, ensure that the primary component of all meals is meat. Consequently, protein should be the main component of your dog’s diet, and it’s very difficult to give your dog too much protein.

It's been 25 years to the day since I ate turkey. Consequently, no turkey has suffered or died on my account for the past quarter century. They can't solve the problem of animal suffering all by themselves, so they throw up their hands in defeat and go on eating meat. My hands, with regard to turkeys, are clean.

Finally, in my e-mailbox this morning, and probably in yours, was the Care2 newsletter, including a link to a column about a restaurant in Arizona that will soon serve burgers made from lion meat. Interviewer: "Oh, so you've killed chickens.".

New studies are beginning to show that smell may be an important part in these birds finding the right nest and/or partner under cover of darkness. Like the tube-nosed birds, new world vultures detect the smells of rotting meat carried by the winds.
