Good for animals, of course – particularly some shy mammals. Therefore, apologies in advance for the largish number of mammal photos in this post. Being a mammal myself, I am understandably much less fond of this animal class than I am of birds. Not in a zoo but in the wild, despite the fence in the background.

The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? In my opinion, neither Harambe nor the child should ever have been at the zoo. Finally, what of the audience?

There are the endemics, which are odd in their own way, and then there introduced species, which are so varied in their type and origin that you get the feeling you’ve arrived at the aftermath of a small zoo that escaped. What is surprising is quite how many species did end up here, and how economically unimportant they were.

One of only two species in the plover genus Thinornis , the other being Australia’s Hooded Plover , this species is another New Zealand endemic. Actually, it’s one I originally thought was endemic to the Chatham Islands, a group of islands to the east of the main islands that hosts endemic species like the Black Robin.

During 1990s, the South China Tiger became extinct in the wild (some still survive in zoos) and the number of extinct races reached four. Conservation endangered species India Mammals tiger' In the 1980-s, another race, the Javan Tiger become extinct and the total numbers halved to somewhat over 20,000.

The land ethic, in sum, is as much opposed, though on different grounds, to commercial traffic in wildlife, zoos, the slaughter of whales and other marine mammals, etc., as is the humane ethic.
