Kerkini in Winter

In the UK we have a mere three resident woodpeckers, but in the vicinity of Kerkini it’s not difficult to find all of Europe’s peckers except the Three-toed. One year we found an impressively big calidus Peregrine, feeding on a Wigeon that it had killed. I’ve only found one once, but it was a delightfully confiding bird.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

Birds Nesting In Siding

In the last few months, Downy Woodpecker s and squirrels have added some holes to the cedar siding of the building. Both are non-native species in Minnesota and drive out native flickers, bluebirds and other cavity nesters to take over to raise their own young. The sparrows will go as far to kill the original makers of the cavity.

They raise their trunks, sniffing the air. Related to starlings, like woodpeckers they move over large mammals feeding on ticks, but also on their hosts’ blood. Nowadays, the Savannah Elephants are shorter and with smaller tusks, often without them. Sniffing us. A flock of Red-billed Oxpeckers is flying above.
