If you see a flock of kestrels in southern Europe, then the chances are that they will be Lessers, for the Common Kestrel never flocks, though occasionally in summer you will see a family hunting together. However, in Southern Spain a small number of birds are resident. Last month in Andalucia I saw only males.

My Year so Far – Modest but Satisfactory

At the time of writing, my British year list stands at a modest but satisfactory 139, while my European list is on 173, thanks to a visit to southern Spain in February. This was a co-operative individual that spent some time hunting a field of rough grass, giving plenty of opportunities for photography. I can’t wait.

My only wolf sightings have been in Spain, in December, and at great range. I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. I’ve yet to see an English pine marten, but I once watched one hunting red squirrels in the Bialowieza Forest in Poland.
