Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.

When it is asked whether animals have rights, and whether human beings have duties to them, the question, I think, is partly moral and partly verbal. It is this latter view, I believe, that is in the minds of some of those who deny that animals have rights.

BBC Nature has a really cool video of the Peregrine hunting a pigeon in a stoop. Working with the local jaguar conservancy, he learned that there are 10 or 11 different animals hunting peccaries and other prey at Selva Bananito. The only difference in the next 8 days will be an earlier wakeup call, at 4.20, but coming from Europe and suffering from jet lag, it wasn’t as bad as it sounds.

To the Editor: In “ Hunting Deer With My Flintlock ” (Op-Ed, Dec. He has volunteered to kill a deer cruelly, ineptly and with an outdated weapon that causes additional suffering to the deer. He says he hunts out of a need to take responsibility for his family, who evidently live where the supermarkets offer no meat.

This says it all: "[T]he vision of sustainable farms that give animals a good life (a life as good as we give our dogs or cats) and an easy death (as easy as a death we give our suffering and terminally ill companion animals) has moved me" (242). You never have to wonder if the fish on your plate had to suffer. This is very silly.
