Logging roads have opened up vast areas to commercial hunting, leading to industrial-scale poaching and a more than 60 per cent drop in the region’s Forest Elephant population in less than a decade. The region also provides food, fresh water and shelter to more than 75 million people of nearly 150 distinct ethnic groups.

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters.

Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. It was even pumping its tail, much like the New World species I am accustomed to. Squacco Heron. This tiny kingfisher thoroughly excited everyone on board. Common Sandpiper. No-one complained.

Unfortunately, developers are hungrily eying the 70-acre parcel despite some local opposition and the fact that it is a wetland that provides excellent habitat to a variety of birds (to say nothing of mammals, insects, etc). And what shorebirds there are!

Sergio and I continue to a sloth shelter, where, waiting for the tour, I sit in a café. Or a mammal. But why would someone look for that, an easy and common one among the 920+ bird species of Costa Rica? Watching my first Brown Pelicans , I am inhaling deeply and commenting to Sergio Arias how strong the scent is.

This species, the smallest, is endemic to North Island and should be fairly common in the wet lowland forests.
