Humane rat control?

Hello, We have some big fat rats in our backyard. At night I hear things on the roof but dont know if its possums, cats, rats, who knows. I dont want to kill them. They seem to know each other. They hang out in one of our trees. Ive seen 3. I think they might be taking shelter in an old decrepit shed. Can I transport them away?

I want to trap a mouse that lives in my house and keep it as a pet. Otherwise it takes its chances out in the field. What do you all think?

So ideally I'd be live and let live but I've done dangerous work on building sites and one of the basic things they stressed was don't get wiles disease from rat urine/feces. 1 - Keep it 2 - Kill it 3 - The field 4 - ? I'll listen to all of you and I'll respond to anyone that asks politely.
