However, unfortunately, this seems to be mainly true for Laced Woodpecker (female) … … and Greater Flameback (female). Seeing a Rufous Woodpecker for the first time, I thought it looked kind of weird. Please keep that in mind if you ever think that Germany’s only contributions to the world are highways and world wars.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. I grew up in a small town in Northern Germany. While the idea of a Ground Woodpecker sounds a bit absurd, it helps to know that this species mostly lives on ants, similar to the Wryneck (another woodpecker, though it does not look much like one).

I decided then and there that I needed to bird Germany in a way that would make a birding Kraut cry with jealousy. Our plane touched down in Dusseldorf on June 14 where our friend picked us up. So right now I’m feeling pretty good about Eurasian Collared-doves. In Germany, they occur throughout but are considerably rarer e.g. around the Baltic or Berlin than they are in the SW. Wicked, right? The reason why they have expanded so rapidly in the Midwest and are still so rare in the NE might have climatic reasons.
