Sorry for banging on about black-footed ferrets, but here’s a bit on why this trip was so special to me: Forty years ago the black-footed ferret was a bit more like the Loch Ness Monster than it is today. The species was extinct, a vanished part of the vanishing prairie — and not for the first time.

Last night I lay awake from 4 am til almost 5, worrying about the black-footed ferrets I met in Montana and the humans who had devoted their lives to helping them. As my fellow blogger Meredith Mann pointed out last summer, the Endangered Species Act in particular has been a massive success for birds.

So, 5% of all birds might mean 10% of all song birds and really, it might be 20% or more of all the birds that die in a given year for specific species, with the species involved being those that are common to a specific habitat in which the cats are found. Is The Hooded Grebe About To Go Extinct?

Twenty two species are distributed among six genera, depending on what happens to be extinct, and for the most part one grebe is like another. This makes Grebes vulnerable to climate change and the predation of invasive species. It is easy to see how Minks set lose in a welcoming habitat could eat an entire species.

Dance Me to the End of Love

The males swagger and boom while the females watch; eventually the gaudiest males and the most impressed females creep off into the bushes and propogate the species. Besides the black-footed ferrets, one of the promised highlights of my trip to the Charles M. Russell NWR was a chance to scope out a Sage Grouse lek and watch the show.
