Laughing Dove and Feral Pigeon were present, as were Hoopoe and Little Bee-eaters, but it was the wheatears that stood out.

I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Once I find a few active species I watch and wait. This particular tree has been excellent for a variety of bird species including Eastern Spinebills.

Thankfully they do live for many years and the population is not in decline at present, despite the feral cats getting their eggs. They are a species of opisthobranch called Haminoea ovalis and they have a small thin shell beneath the mantle. We have never seen two survive and the success of even one is remote.

The Canvasback and Northern Pintail I had hoped for were both present and the temperatures had dropped enough that most of Flushing Bay was frozen, leaving the ducks in a small run of open water by the World’s Fair Marina.

It appeared that Lake Bindegolly National Park could also offer us the same birding opportunities if there was water present. There was evidence of the mussels that would be a source of food for many species in the receding water line. Feral pigs. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals. Mussels at Lake Bindegolly.

Black-fronted Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Willie Wagtails ran along the muddy edges where there was evidence of feral pigs. Brolga , Crested Pigeons , Peaceful Doves , Little Corellas , Zebra Finch , Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Galahs were present early in the morning and late in the afternoon when they came in to drink.
