This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore.

I had forgotten all about Michael Jackson and his chimp Bubbles whom he rescued from a research facility. Chimpanzees, like Travis the chimp who mauled the woman in Connecticut, are not meant to be family pets. They are wild creatures and their psychology must suffer from these abnormal arrangements. This is not surprising.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.
