Eighty years of Duck Stamp sales, $800 million and 6 million acres protected? This is wonderful news right? Obviously these numbers would be so much better with a larger pool of participants.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. A worrying trend. Birds should be free. The photos of Sultan Tit that I got at Hongbenghe in 2017 were much better than the ones I got on Hainan in 2022.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

As you can see, this is not a promising trend. Like all members of the Nightjar family, the Buff-collared Nightjar hunts for insects on the wing, at night, and rests immobile during the day, protected by its subtle camouflage. With this sighting, I have now seen four of Michoacán’s six members of the Nightjar family.
