You’re planning to take the whole family to Disneyland. You’re not so keen on the idea of leaving your pets to your next-door neighbor. It sounds a bit over-the-top but a lot of people have experienced separation anxiety when they go for days without seeing their pets. That is one pet on vacation, I’ll say! That’s right!

Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. The Scaly Laughingthrush (Baihualing, Yunnan) once finished as runner-up at a birds-that-look-like-reptiles contest that was won by a Scaly Thrush (not shown). This post shows some of them.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. Even though the English name may indicate that it mainly feeds on crests, it really mostly eats reptiles, primarily tree snakes (HBW). I am only joking!

I happen to be particularly fond of turtles because my family has taken care of a small box turtle for 30 years (beware–turtles are extremely low-maintenance pets but will outlast your child’s youth and probably your life). Rehabbers see reptiles in glue traps, gulls entangled in fishing line, raccoons used as target practice, raptors dying from rodenticides, and songbirds shredded by domestic cats … cats like Puck. It’s tribal and familial. Caring for our own is an element of survival.

This has happened before, Archaeopteryx and the bird family tree have had an often tenuous relationship. If you lay out all the mandibles and maxilla of all the mammals, you could construct a phylogeny that would be a pretty good first stab at a reasonable mammal family tree. That’s what Archaeopteryx is.
