Audubon’s Hog Island Audubon Camp attracts birders of all skills levels every summer and Acadia National Park, Monhegan Island, Machias Seal Island, and Scarborough Marsh are nationally known birding hotspots. I’ve missed this information, especially when I travel to Los Angeles to visit my daughter and her family.

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. There is a large family of frogs, Bufonidae, that includes most of the warty, hoppy creatures we think of as toads.

There are owls in New York City. They are the city’s latest, maybe only, celebrity media sensation, and photographs show crowds of New Yorkers craning their necks up as far as their masks allow, holding phones at arm’s length, using opera glasses and huge binoculars that remind me of the ones my dad used at the racetrack.

I’m lucky that these once-common North American nightjars regularly pass over my house in upstate New York twice a year, both during their northbound spring migration and even more so in the fall on their way south. Undoubtedly to some people the new cardboard container represents a vast improvement over tradition.
