And while finding snails is not difficult for a long legged bird that is not afraid to wade into alligator-infested marshes it is difficult to extract the yummy snail meat from its protective shell. The snail was not very large but I was impressed with the size of the chunk of snail meat hiding in the recesses of the shell.

One of my most vivid memories of watching The Sopranos – still the best TV series ever, in my opinion – is Tony outside barbecuing, occasionally turning the different pieces of meat. On a side note, the bird is also kind of ugly, so maybe the chicks never seeing their father has a certain protective function. Female below.

The hunters currently pushing copper bullets have seen the x-rays proving that lead bullets splinter when they enter an animal, and they know that the meat hunters feed their families is filled with lead fragments (x-ray, left, of white-tailed deer.) On November 13, “The Sportsmen’s Heritage Act” will come in front of the Senate.

Or, Pygmy leaf-folding frogs, Afrixalus brachycnemis, from Tanzania, tiny climbing frogs who lay their eggs in leaves and then fold the leaves over them for protection, sealing the nest with secretions. There is a large family of frogs, Bufonidae, that includes most of the warty, hoppy creatures we think of as toads.
