We've written about the Calgary Zoo here before. To many people, the number of animal fatalities at the Calgary Zoo in newer years seemed very high. A hippo passed away following a long, horrible transfer from another zoo. Woodyer wanted Lanthier to quit and for the zoo’s accreditation to be taken away.

Birding Kabul, Afghanistan

I am only including them in this post to give you my real-life Kabul experience … Four species are the most easily seen in the few urban parks (into which women are not actually allowed to enter – I am not sure about female birds). I did not actually go to Afghanistan for birding. The photos taken with my mobile phone all suck.

This endangered endemic is always tough even right in the middle of its specialized mangrove habitat. Unfortunately, perhaps because of drier than normal weather, or because big ideas tend to be learning experiences, we couldn’t find any flowering Heliconias at a restaurant or even along the road.
