It was declared a National Park (Monumento Natural) in 1981 to protect the nesting of up to 25,000 flamingos and many other water-foul and birds that depend on this fragile ecosystem, the Puna. A heard of Lesser Rheas cross the road in front of us giving us a great opportunity to do some photography and videos of these great birds!

Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Very interesting species. The former British colony’s Z.c. melli strain is one of as many as 12 races and shows a lighter face than many of the others. Married to a Canon? That I understand! They are most visible on the napes of passerines.
