The first impression you may get when you observe a Tawny Frogmouth is that it is some sort of Owl , because it can look similar. Most were similar to what we had seen in September, with the addition of Magpie Geese in the flooded long grass. Tawny Frogmouths are actually more closely related to the Nightjar family.

Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. That is to say, all four of their toes are webbed. There’s lots to see, so sit back and enjoy this photo-heavy post. Wicked, right?

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

Most of them based in a single attractive, historic, and easily walkable city or town, my tours, under VENT’s Birds, Nature, and Culture rubric, always see plenty of birds: hoopoes and rollers in France, Great Bustards and bean geese in Germany, Fulvous Owls and Black-capped Swallows in Guatemala are just a few examples.

Further north, we slow down by the ruins of an old farm… and yes, a Little Owl greets us with its ‘smiling’ face. even before I took binoculars, I was always chasing, hmm… impressionable experiences. Belgrade lies on the cranes’ migratory corridor and, especially in Spring, flocks are regularly spotted above the city.

Carrie had been at Jones Beach pretty recently , but was happy to return, while I’m not sure that John had ever been, but he certainly seemed to enjoy the experience. The owl was simple to see and John had it in his bins within a minute of commencing to look.

One of the neognath branches is called Galloanserae and consists today of the the Galliformes or landfowl (megapodes, guans, guineafowl, patridges, pheasants, grouse, turkeys, quail, and relatives) and the specialized aquatic Anseriformes or waterfowl (ducks, geese, swans, and related waterfowl, along with the weird South American screamers).

I have discovered one error: the table of contents doesn’t list species accounts past “Raptors and Owls.” The mystery of their presence makes finding one, chasing one, viewing one a unique experience.
