This shaggy, slaty, storklike creature possesses a proboscis preposterous enough to put it in league with pelicans, toucans, and curlews. The Shoebill serves as the symbol of the magnificent wildlife experiences Uganda offers visitors, which may seem a bit odd. Central Africa has one of those birds.

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. Yet, we didn’t get far when a smallish falcon flew over the dyke and landed on a log in the mud. Further south, heading towards the dam, is a cove from where Nikos Gallios sails out for Dalmatian Pelican photography tours. Sure, why not.

In my experience non-birders connect with the travel, visiting beautiful places and spectacle of birding and hawkwatching often entails all three. In my experience if you show a non or novice birder their first Bald Eagle and they will be amazed, show someone their first Thayer’s Gull and they aren’t likely to gasp (sorry, larophiles)!

We look at the Six Pelicans who rest at night and see Brown Pelicans because we already know what pelicans look like. ‘Six Pelicans Rest at night. I do wonder, however, if Harper’s birds are too minimally visual for a toddler’s eyes. Or, maybe this is how toddlers see birds! Seven Finches Stand apart.

Speaking of hawks, two talented and extremely knowledgeable falconers, Marie Gaspari Crawford and Chloe Bowen, shared with us their birds and their experiences. It’s small enough to provide hands-on, interactive experiences with experts that may not be so easy to achieve at larger festivals with crowds of people.
