How much do you know about owls? I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. I’m sure many of you have had similar experiences. This isn’t a rhetorical question, think about it. I don’t think so.

One of the rites of passage I underwent as a birder following my move from New York City to upstate New York was my first winter excursion to the rolling, snow-covered grasslands north of Albany to look for Short-eared Owls ( Asio flammeus ). Sometimes you’ll see no owls at all. You usually wind up frozen either way, owls or not.

Alas, I had no time outdoors this weekend, which leaves House Sparrows sheltering a giant wreath as my Best Bird of the Weekend. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was one that many birders across the Northeastern and Midwestern United States probably also selected, a Snowy Owl. What was your best bird of the weekend?

Lacking the benefit of heated shelters, birds must heed that warning or perish. This is why the Yellow Warblers and Baltimore Orioles of summer don’t linger to experience October 31st, and even late fall migrants like kinglets and sparrows move to slightly warmer regions. Spectacled Owl. Pygmy-Owls.

This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. We spent our evenings cooking, playing cards, enjoying adult beverages, and listening to Barred Owls duets. How cute is this? Mom has a bug! I am adorable!

In doing so, they have provided food and shelter for thousands of migrant birds along with habitat for hundreds of resident birds and other players in the local Talamanca rainforest ecosystem. Scope looks were had at the pygmy-owl just before we saw the jacamar. The picture might not be so great but the bird is.
