In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. For you and me, there are about 200 bird species, but for proper tourists, there seem to be only five species in the reserve: Bengal Tiger , Leopard , Sloth Bear , Indian Wild Dog (Dhole) and the Gaur. February 2013. And we are in it.

Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Here is one: when taking photos of elephants, an 800 mm tele lens is not the best equipment. Even if – as in Borneo – the elephants are comparatively small (they are actually called Borneo pygmy elephants).

The forests are also home to Asiatic Elephants and Capped Langur Monkeys. Kaziranga has one of the densest populations of Bengal Tiger in India. We would also visit Ranthambore National Park where we hope to see more wonderful wildlife, and with luck, tiger. Or you may like to join us on a Rajashtan Tour?

Despite being an ordinary family with the usual interests in elephants, lions, tigers and the likes (there are sadly no Banded Pittas at Heidelberg Zoo), there is one feature that has been our main attraction and focus for the last few months: the duck pond.

In any case, if these two stork species are split and you want to research the Asian species, you will still have to face the tigers. On this trip, this forced me to participate in a side trip to the nearby Tembe Elephant Park. Mostly just oversized grey mammals there, not too many birds.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).
