'Its amazing to me that there are still places on earth where wildlife is blissfully unafraid of humans. Isla Isabel, a picturesque volcanic island situated 15 miles off Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit coast, is just such a place. The island is half a mile wide and about three-quarters of a mile in length. It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds.

'Clapper and King rails ( Rallus longirostris and R. elegans ) are the largest rails in the Americas. Their taxonomic status long has been unclear due to their overall similarity and the fact that in eastern North America and Cuba, they hybridize. But some recent work by James Maley and others is shedding more light on these secretive and fascinating birds.

'One question every self-described birder must grapple with is to twitch or not to twitch. Some of us love to chase down preposterous vagrants, while others eschew bird chasing for contemplation of standard local fare and seasonal specialties. I raise this perennial issue because I found myself twitching a rare ABA bird this weekend. Did you? My ill-advised twitch was a run for the Long Island Ruffs recently spotted on the south shore.

Believe me, after hiking up a mountain in the middle of the night just to catch a glimpse of this bird, I have mixed feelings about whether we even need it in a world with abundant Gray-cheeked Thrush , its more copious counterpart.

'The Godwit Days Spring Migration Bird Festival in Arcata and Eureka on the north coast of California was fabulous! I added several birds to my 2013 year list during my four day stay, including the Surfbird ( Aphriza virgata ). The Surfbird outside of the breeding season can be found along almost the entire Pacific Coast of the Americas, from southeastern Alaska all the way to Tierra del Fuego in southern Chile.

'As Redgannet has pointed out, photographing high-flying, quick-moving, and extremely maneuverable birds is not easy. In fact, he advised you not to try to take pictures of swifts. I decided to follow his advice, mostly because the Chimney Swifts aren’t back to my neighborhood yet, and instead I spent a good portion of Sunday afternoon trying to get pictures of swallows, Northern Rough-winged Swallows to be exact.

'We have finally returned home to Broome after spending most of the year either birding and camping in Queensland or birding around Grant’s work commitments in and around Karratha in the Pilbara district of Western Australia. It is really good to be home and back with our familiar birds and although we have already seen 320 species this year they have been mostly away from home.

'Magnificent Frigatebirds soaring over Mexico’s Isla Isabel. (These weren’t the only amazing birds James enjoyed at Isla Isabel !). Avian migration may come in a trickle or a torrent depending on time of year, weather patterns, and mysterious phenomena known only to wild animals and wealthy farmers. Early spring, which is still the season where I live, releases new species a few at a time.
