Southern Bavaria in December

10,000 Birds

I was very glad to be able to spend the week of Christmas and the new year at the Tegernsee, a small lake in southern Bavaria, together with my family and my girlfriend. While I did take advantage of the comfort inside, we did regularly venture outside and I was glad to have a few good birding moments.

How many can YOU see in a day?

10,000 Birds

And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. For example, of the 9 duck species we saw, 7 are winter-only. The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. Four eyes are better than two.

10,000 Birds

The African Pygmy Goose to me looks a bit like an annoying teenager on a subway train who wants to highlight the fact that he wears enormous earphones. Birding the Schlachtensee

10,000 Birds

Slaughter Lake does not sound like it would be a nice place to visit but we three Americans, my small family, were blissfully unaware of what Schlachtensee translates to before our expedition there. It was nice to get off the train, cross the street, and be at a place as beautiful as this.
