When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

Now, I don't want to do anything extreme, like go vegan. Veganism is too fringe for me, and I'm pretty sure you have to be a Communist, or at least a Socialist, to be a vegan. And I don't think vegans believe in God, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't believe in God. How do they know what's right?

I've been out of every loop I used to be in because my work outside of veganism and animal rights came a-calling in a most critical way. There are new Francione-style abolitionists and new people to veganism who debate about the ethics of consuming eggs from their neighbor's chickens. Yes, we have a long, long way to go.

I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." They've hijacked enough already!

From the feral cats of Project Treadstone to Charles' back surgery to problems with Violet's Vetsulin (insulin for dogs), we had more than our share of issues. Dogs have died from hypoglycemia due to Vetsulin and there is a class action lawsuit. Like many people with diabetic dogs, I haven't had major problems with Vetsulin.

We went this route because he isn't putting weight on his back right leg anymore (you can even see the muscle atrophy--look at the difference--it's not because of the angle). And of course, I will use the meetings as an opportunity for vegan outreach. He sure was a trooper, though. been there.

I began my journey by discovering something you all probably know, which is that you can substitute cooked black-eyed peas or adzuki beans for flour, like in the recipe for the above vegan flourless chocolate cake. And the dogs' spirits are high, as they get plenty of attention and stimulation. I may never use flour again.

This brings up the question of how one can distinguish between what is forbidden by lactovo moral vegetarianism and vegan moral vegetarianism. Who Should Not Eat Meat, or What Does a Vegetarian Feed His Dog? Moral concepts such as “right” and “wrong” apply only to autonomous beings. The dog, let us say, has bitten a child.

I say "if you know someone" because this isn't a book I'd recommend to vegans for their vegan education efforts. The vegans I know would probably find it a bit maddening, and here's why: We aren't sure whether Foer is a vegan. Not great, but good. He never says he is. But why does he say "vegetarian?"

While visiting another set of children who have a lizard in a tank as well as a dog, the dog is called "he" but the lizard is called "it." All animals except the dog are called "it" (I did a little experiment to see what would happen). I remember that as a child I called all cats "she" and dogs "he" in the absence of a name.

Meat-packing companies might encourage, for example, an increased dog population to take up the slack. It is certainly likely that a similar phenomenon would occur if vegan vegetarianism became a widespread movement in the U.S. But so could lots of other things: wearing an animal rights button, picketing meat-packing houses, and so on.
