I routinely vow to put an emotional wall between the birds I care for and me, to keep in mind that a good percentage of them will not make it, and to realize my heart is already in pieces so I should protect myself from further damage. The job of consoling me fell mostly to my dog. Tiny nestlings were safe around him.

My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. Coming down from the emotional high we noticed our grumbling stomachs: time to eat. We got at least three sub-species but the highlight was a Wilson’s Snipe we flushed. We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote.
