When you move on to Montana, you discover that there are worse things that one species of tiny screaming mammal tricking you each year as you try to cope with an influx of songbirds and a winterized memory bank that contains only Black-capped Chickadees and Dark-eyed Juncos (and only about half their calls at that.) You sigh and move on.

The mother only returns once maybe twice a day to feed and some species of rabbits like the eastern Cottontail have their babies in the open rather than burrows. 3) Rabbits have one of the highest caloric milks among mammals so cows milk isn’t going to cut it. It’s just not their function and against a few rules.

Birds hatch out of eggs, like some species of snakes, who also have no boobs, although with a snake the fact is more readily apparent. In summary: unless you’re a cow or a human, cow’s milk is always a bad idea. Even wild mammals – fawns, squirrels, bunnies, etc. Birds have no boobs. Milk + Wildlife = Big Mistake.

I took home a few of the pellets and found that the owls were feasting on grey squirrels and cottontail rabbits. Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. Who cares, the fact that he could narrow it down to 2 species was quite amazing to me. But the jawbone…that was from a bat!

The thought of an Oriole foraging in bare winter branches is as foreign as a Petrel on a pool and yet, there it was in my yard picking through an abandoned squirrel’s nest for what appeared to be spiders. A trip to the coastal plain may net you up to seven species of warblers, from the omnipresent Yellow-rumps to Chats and Cape Mays.

Both Trinidad and Tobago share over a hundred species but within the mix are many that are found on one island and not the other. The disparity in species could be stark, for example if one were to bird on different sides of the planet. I don’t keep lists but one of my guests did and the final tally was 166 species.

During a week based in Äkäslompolo, a small Finnish town a couple of hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, we struggled to get to 27 species. Reindeer cow A grey Red Squirrel The post Lapland Adventure first appeared on 10,000 Birds. Reindeer , of course, were everywhere, including the middle of town.
