Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed. This community based organisation has been working in rural Taranaki, near where I went up the mountain. Rare species, like North Island Brown Kiwi , have been reintroduced.

Hence, it was a bit of an annoyance to be forced to hire a general nature guide who knows mostly mammals. My group arrived in a larger and more comfortable SUV and with a knowledgeable bird guide from within the state. Hence, it is a matter of luck which trail you get and probably makes no sense to rise much trail-relevant hopes in the guide.

There was also a mammal jawbone in the pellet too. I wasn’t as interested in the mammal jawbone, but it totally piqued his interest. He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections. I was intrigued…what could that beak be from? What was throwing me off were the feathers.

Part of that research was to document human avoidance by ground mammals, and that was stark and apparent. But in the absence of Efe Pygmy hunters, we ran into ground mammals much more frequently, and not because we were doing a better job of sneaking around. During the former periods, we certainly came across animals, but rarely.

If they are "only" animals, if they are beasts which abstract not, then my comparison is a piece of sentimental foolishness. Like other mammals, they are capable of strong emotions. These chimps are healthy and well-fed. But chimpanzees can abstract. They have certainly committed no crimes.

Primates are exceptional among the mammals, living amphibians (which represent only a small part of the original amphibian family tree) are pretty noisy too. Except, of course, there are, or should I say, there is one , so far, to make that comparison. Very few other vertebrates use sound so socially and so critically.

In comparison to the Dorcol Promenade, number of both species and individuals here is smaller. The only mammal species I have observed here were the Brown Hare and Least Weasel , but Golden Jackals and even Wild Boars are present, too. The next winter bird spot lies some 4.5 km / 2 mi downriver – the Ada Huja Promenade. eBird list.
