Eventually, it headed east out of sight and we continued our birding, only to join in a hunt for the kingbird when other birders arrived who wanted to see it. I don’t think we ever saw the second one but the first one twice, as photo comparisons between my sightings seem to show the same individual. So, this was better?

Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). One of the primary reasons that these hawks make such excellent falconry birds is because they are one of only two raptor species (the other is the Galapagos Hawk ) that hunt cooperatively.

Yellow-crowned Night Herons have a presence about them when they are hunting that reminds me of Buddhist monks. If “The greatest prayer is patience,&# as the Buddha is alleged to have said, then the comparison is perhaps apt, as nothing embodies patience more than Nyctanassa violacea.

A quite uncommon bird – there are only about 6000 pairs on the planet and this is one of only a handful of my observations of this species. In the approaching sunset, a male Common Kestrel is hunting… possibly some of the Common Quail whose “wet-my-lips” I can hear from the grass.

From a birder’s perspective however, this is both a shame and a blessing, as I will show below based on my observations of the species on the island of Java in November. The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. The Brown Prinia is an Asian species with a very peculiar range.

The Veliko Ratno Island birdlist is about 170 species long, of which more than 90 were observed from the Dorcol Promenade. Highlight species: Ferruginous Duck , Goosander , Red-breasted Merganser , Red-crested Pochard , Greater Scaup , Velvet Scoter , Black-throated Diver. In March and November, Common Cranes are a possibility.

He asked to take the pellet downstairs to do some comparisons to the collections. Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. Who cares, the fact that he could narrow it down to 2 species was quite amazing to me. He returned less than 30 minutes later with surprising news.
