Nineteenth and early twentieth century naturalists collected birds on long and arduous exploratory expeditions in the New World. When not climbing, he collected species, and thus a number of birds are named after him. The Little Cuckoo-Dove indeed looks like a cross between a pigeon and a cuckoo, though it is the former, proudly (and in my opinion, mistakenly) raising its own chicks despite the costs and annoyances of doing so.

Between staying warm/cool, finding food, avoiding predators, migrating thousands of miles every year, finding mates, raising chicks and doing all this at the mercy of the elements, it makes sense that they have more brainpower than just simple instinct to run on. Because we planned to adopt I had been researching eco-friendly, vegan nursery items but had yet to purchase a thing. Instead, in 24 hours (Saturday the 26th), I collected secondhand everything locally, and then friends brought clothing and other supplies from when their little girls and boys were newborns. As with Chinese male humans, having your own building is still vital to raising young. So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. Interestingly, Black-winged Stilts display laterality – that is, they preferentially use one eye (the right one) to find prey. Most scientific research really just proves the obvious.

It’s a book about ornithological research yet reads almost like a novel. Compared even to other Swarovski bins (such as the ELs, on the right of the photo), the NLs can make birds appear somehow “more” of themselves, larger than life, with the details more striking. A terrific book. Look at that cover!
