Believe me, Staphylococcus aurea is not the kind of species I would choose to write about on 10,000 Birds. Like many modern-day photographic birders, I have built up a huge backlog of photos on my long-suffering laptop. Not a sugar problem, in case anyone thought of that; my fasting sugar levels are perfectly healthy.)

The whole estuary is world class with pasture for fighting bulls, rice fields, mudflats, cork oak forests, salt pans and open water. The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). The only guaranteed sighting would be the Zitting Cisticola.

In the grand scheme of things, this is just a small town and only one person was killed due to injuries suffered. The next spring she reported that her first class was doing very well and were able to rapidly identify nearly 200 species. On Mother’s Day, an F2 Tornado hit the small town of Delmont, South Dakota.

I even attended taxonomy classes at university. I also know the field guides I use very well, and I know where to find which bird species in the book. You see, the species in my field guides, as in the vast majority of field guides everywhere, are in taxonomic order. I also love bird identification.

They belong to the canine species Nyctereutes procyonoides. Each semester when I teach Contemporary Moral Issues, on the first day of class I begin with a survey. Anyone who thinks that it is morally wrong to cause an animal to suffer for no good reason is committed to the prima facie wrongness of causing animals to suffer.
