With travel restrictions still in place, going on a birding trip outside of China is still not a practical option. Fortunately, China itself has a large number of bird species and habitats. I guess it is pretty common in many areas of China, but not in Shanghai, so it is still a special bird for me.

Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice. when living in suburbia. How is that for a link?

Please note that the illegal bile farm was Taiwanese-owned. Again, the China connection. I can't read such stuff without being sickened by my species. Tags: taiwan Traditional Chinese Medicine bear bile china asia. Moon bears are rare, which makes this all the sadder. Thank Animals Asia for the rescue.

That makes me a bit of an oddity here in China, where people share photos of their meals online and spend (by my rough estimate) about half of their lifetime talking and thinking about what to eat next. Little Egret: There is a shrimp farm by the seaside. Cuckoo species (common?): Black-capped Kingfisher. Very easy work.

They have been pretty frustrated with China, who really doesn't give a rip about tigers.unless they can raise them on farms for "medicinal" harvest and other capitalist pursuits. Tags: India poaching tigers china endangered species.

And, of course, the reputation of certain species of birds as troublemakers for humans is a problem in bird conservation, so this is worth watching. Close to 5% of turkeys being farmed in Minnesota have been or shortly will be destroyed , and the virus is also affecting chickens. Or, even, many of them. Will H5N2 Kill Wild Birds?

On the other hand, in April, some other species start breeding here in Shanghai. A few kilometers inland from the coast, a sod farm reliably attracts Little Curlew … … And Oriental Pratincole with its lovely lipstick-like red gape, see my usual rubythroat remark further down in this post. Maybe the birds know something.
