To round up the day, in our base-village of Chrisochorafa, we later had one adorable Little Owl just a few hundred metres from our hotel. I went to explore the best birding area of the national park, the legendary eastern levee, and this day started with another Little Owl in the next village.

I birded parks, landfills, fields, backyards, skies, oceans, lakes, ponds, and roads in 15 states–some familiar haunts and patches, some as part of family visits, some while passing through, some adventures with friends (three trips with N.J. Snowy Owl, Long Island, NYS. It was, indeed, a Snowy Owl.

We started our Singapore bird list at Pasir Ris and leaving the train station we were delighted to see several Cattle Egrets on the grass and several photographers. There is a massive nest at the top of a tower beside the Sports Centre and a family of Monk Parakeets have taken up residence. Sunda Scops Owl. Common Sandpiper.

During the breeding season, some Cattle Egrets look like teenage girls who have just discovered the existence of make-up, and consequently massively overdo it. But what do I know about the taste preferences of Cattle Egrets. It is probably all downhill from here. What’s next? Identification of subspecies?

It didn’t take much imagination to name Cowbirds or Cattle Egrets or Cattle Tyrants , but there’s more fantasy, even more wit, involved in the naming of other bovine birds. The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched. They’re all named for livestock. Wicked, right?

Then, we became birders again, noting Common Mynas and Eastern Cattle Egrets on the terraced lawns, Yellow-footed Pigeons, European-collared and Red-collared Doves in the trees bordering the garden squares. Luckily, I didn’t have to look hard to find the Dusky Eagle-Owl’s nest. It was a big owl.

The Barn Owl was a cosmopolitan species, so as it is split the name has to be shared (American, western and eastern). Similarly when the Hoopoe and Cattle Egret were split, these are widespread birds with huge ranges even after the split. The Blue Tit, the common garden staple of Europe, was now the Eurasian Blue Tit. Well, no more!
