One of the many things I did not know about Delhi is that it is the capital city with the second-largest number of bird species (after Nairobi). House-hunting, apparently. Cattle Egret. Doing what cattle egrets do: communicating with cattle, even though these tend to be somewhat dull conversation partners.

They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Here they were easy to overlook.

That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

Ethiopia, a landlocked country situated in the Horn of Africa, has firmly established itself as one of Africa’s top birding destinations. Yellow-billed Stork.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. They may have also had hunting dogs with them as well. Which would be weird.

Of course, this raptor pattern baldness exists for a good reason, which is another of the distasteful aspects of vulturine biology. The smellier the better, particularly as, unusually for birds, many species can boast a robust sense of smell. Vultures famously feed on carrion. Dead things. One study found that birds living in Botswana had elevated levels of lead in their bloodstreams during hunting season, presumably coming from lead bullets used on animals killed by hunters.
