Like Kapiti the island is an offshore refuge for many species extinct on the mainland, with a lot of the work being done by the voluntary Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. One species I really hoped to find on the trip was the Kokako. Saddleback ( Philesturnus carunculatus ) on the beach. Wicked, right? Hat-tip to Stella.

It is not a new book, about 6 years old. Today we are looking at two species that can be difficult to separate under typical field conditions. I have encountered this situation only one time in my birding experience. I tried on a purist attitude and chose not to ID the species. But not while flying. Think “white”.

In the right season, with a little luck, we often find it, and sometimes it perches high and long enough that we can admire its scimitar of a bill, its stern face pattern, and even the patch of rusty red on the undertail that gives the species its English and its scientific names.
