Thankfully with the longevity of this species it appears the population is fairly stable, but this may not always be the case if predation continues at the rate that it is. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young.

Not only are the individual ducks hard to look at, but in groups, the feral populations create the same messes other masses of waterfowl do.

If the whole thing passed you by then Mother Jones did a good piece on why zoos sometimes have to kill individuals for the good of the species. There was a story this morning that did make my blood freeze, and it had nothing to do with four big cats biting the bullet. Like much of conservation, its the best of a bunch of bad options.

The lack of people does not mean we have any less extinct or threatened bird species than other countries. European settlement in Australia has been the cause of the decline of a variety of bird species and if not directly, then indirectly by the introduction of other species that have been the cause of their decline.
