Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. A Kerkini mini-tiger Disappointingly, mammal encounters are few, other than the odd Roe Deer. Kerkini’s most famous mammal is the domesticated Water Buffalo – large herds are kept around the lake.

The monkeys made sense; many species of apes and monkeys are adaptable to many climates and are similar to humans in terms of anatomy. This reminded me of those hippos at Pablo Escobar’s compound that have since proliferated and then I just kept thinking about other potential species. The giraffes did not.

Phoebe Snetsinger was an American birder who first passed the 8,000 species mark. It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. Looking left I saw a big, male buffalo behind the bush. So, apart from large vicious mammals and venomous snakes, what else can possibly go wrong while birding?

This is the thing—no matter how devoted you are to birds and birding, once you get to Africa, you can’t resist the mammals. This means you need to pack a mammal guide in addition to your bird guide. Believe me, I tried.

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! Quite a few mammals come out in the open to steal bananas left for the birds. Yet, scoring more than 700 species, Mercedes Alpizar soon became “Meche”, the bird guide that we are all familiar with.
