It’s home to Kokako and Little Spotted Kiwi , and has been a refuge used in protecting the endangered Kakakpo. It also is home to the breeding sites of vulnerable seabirds including the Cook’s Petrel and Black Petrel, both species are considered vulnerable.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the largest assemblages of breeding seabirds in the United States. These islands and their surrounding waters are protected as part of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Midway’s birds are also protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. In 1951, there were 18 breeding pairs of cahows discovered on three tiny islands.

A range of hills protects the cove from the eastern wind, yet, the bushes are swaying in the rythm of it. This shearwater is a Mediterranean endemic, breeding from Sardinia and Corsica to the Adriatic and the Aegean. Still, we are sailing out of the marina soon and I should have some coffee before that.

Using ministerial connections he obtained 100 mallard eggs from the US and began to breed and distribute them.
