Fed by the freshwater of Henderson Creek, the bay eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike many other estuaries in this part of Florida, Rookery Bay is protected by the Estuarine Research Reserve system, and remains almost entirely undeveloped. Rookery Bay is dominated by mangrove, a mix of Red, White, and Black varieties.

A few breed on the main Hawaiian islands, including Kilauea Point NWR on Kauai. Black-footed Albatross : The most common albatross off the west coast, virtually all of the world’s Black-footed Albatross also breed in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, on the same islands as the Laysan Albatross on Hawaiian Islands NWR and Midway Atoll NWR.

Many species had left for breeding in more northerly climates, and those that remained hid out in cool spots until saner temperatures reigned in the morning and evening. Lower Suwanee River National Wildlife Refuge. We had hit state and nationally protected areas, and now were ready for Cedar Key city gems. My favorite?

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Ringer Gannets and Boobies (Sulidae) Black-and-white gannets breed on the cold, rocky coasts of the northern and southern oceans. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.
