Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. I have a fascinating little reference book called Whose Bird? Eleonora’s Falcons still breed on Sardinia today.

The Latin name swinhoii is a reference to Robert Swinhoe, a British naturalist and diplomat with the usual shortish but colorful life of many of the colonial managers. For quite a few birders visiting Wuyuan, the main reason is to see the Blue-crowned Laughingthrush. Participated in the opium wars, died of syphilis, etc.

I'm going to refer to it as just one from now on) is very brave and runs right across the floor when I'm watching TV. My dog is a livestock guardian breed so when she saw the mouse I just said to leave it and now it walks right past her too she ignores it like the spiders, I made sure she was well trained.

The broader Balangshan area has three different parts – the low elevation of nearby Wolongshan, the higher part of the road across the mountain that is referred to as the tunnel area among birders, and the actual Balangshan pass, which reaches an altitude of 4500 meters or so.

The Bar-backed Partridge was also one of four focal species in an investigation into illegal bird hunting in Southwestern China. As usual, this refers to the silvery-grey color of the male rather than the brown color of the female. The last bird shown in this post is a Pallas’s Leaf Warbler – but is it really?
