The benefits are many, including the availability of anthropogenic food sources, breeding boxes and warmer temperatures. Another group simply heard adult songs played through a speaker.

After one 3 year stint, they left with 131,405 specimens including birds, mammals, reptiles, plants and even human remains (which were only recently repatriated for burial in Africa!) Woodward’s Barbet belongs to a group of barbets known as Green Barbets. They discovered Gurney’s Sugarbird during their time in South Africa.

It seems the ones I got decent photos of are all juveniles – it generally seems to be easier to get photos of juveniles as they have not quite learned to avoid humans. Thank god that this does not apply to humans.

And much of that time is spend loafing around the breeding colonies trying to pair off and engaging in silly-looking behaviours referred to as dancing by scientists. It can take over a year to raise a chick for the larger species, and even species that can fit their entire breeding cycle into one year tend not to breed in consecutive years.

The causes were the usual reasons for island extinction—deforestation by both humans and invasive plants that crowded out native plants, hunting, and invasive rats, mongoose, monkeys, and, of course, feral cats. Is it any wonder that Pink Pigeons were on the brink of extinction when humans intervened? I know, that’s harsh.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. My friend Vickie Henderson , who has some serious long-range vision, looked at the science behind Tennessee’s crane hunting proposal and found it badly wanting. There are 400 whooping cranes left in the wild, 100 of them in the eastern population.

None fly, most are curious and social, which probably contributes to our cultural perception of penguins as one step away from human. Eight to eleven photographs illustrate each two-page species account, and a map shows breeding sites and population strongholds. Some are cute, some are dignified (and royal!).

Hopefully, the winter time in Shanghai gives the Black-faced Buntings some time to relax from the challenges of the breeding season. One Japanese study found that it arrives at its breeding grounds earlier than in the past, most likely due to increased spring temperatures. No wonder no species are named after me.
