Not surprisingly, this brings Burrowing Owls into close contact with humans across the county. This is unfortunately an all too common problem for these owls in Florida.

The magnificent, adorable, and dangerous breeding season for both shorebirds and seabirds along the Florida Panhandle. I saw the first sign of the impending breeding season on the beach at Deer Lake State Park. Soon, these ropes and signs will be on nearly all the breeding beaches, plus a few bridges and rooftops to boot.

I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.

The Return of Least Terns to the Gulf Coast

Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from South America to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered.
