Broward County has one of the highest densities of Burrowing Owls in Florida. It also has one of the highest human population densities in the state. Not surprisingly, this brings Burrowing Owls into close contact with humans across the county. This is unfortunately an all too common problem for these owls in Florida.

The magnificent, adorable, and dangerous breeding season for both shorebirds and seabirds along the Florida Panhandle. I saw the first sign of the impending breeding season on the beach at Deer Lake State Park. Soon, these ropes and signs will be on nearly all the breeding beaches, plus a few bridges and rooftops to boot.

This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. Which makes it a haven for seabirds….and and seabirders.

We felt awash in blues as our tour boat skirted the waves to anchor near a shallow sand flat off of Key West, Florida. I was on a workshop field trip, learning about marine protected areas as my group snorkeled on one of the area’s famous coral reefs. Still, they are sensitive to human disturbance.

Fortunately, Singapore is not Florida, where Mr. DeSantis would probably have the two birds described in a paper culled (though the paper talks about “aberrant” behavior, which is a phrase Mr. DeSantis would probably feel comfortable with).

The Return of Least Terns to the Gulf Coast

Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from South America to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered.

First off, Audubon of Florida reports that counts indicate more Roseate Spoonbills are nesting in Florida Bay (between the mainland and the Keys) this year than last year, although those numbers are still lower than in the last decade. The hope is that their presence while inspire the grown-ups to breeding success.

In the majority of cases, it is humans who are to blame for the plunging numbers of animals, and Corwin is very clear about the extent to which we have destroyed the world around us. I got to see a beautiful female and owlet on a trip to a secret nest location near Howard Prairie Lake (human-made nest structures have enhanced local breeding for these huge owls whose nest success is boosted to 83% on artificial platforms vs. 66% at natural sites).
