It’s an exciting time for birding in Costa Rica. Migration is happening in Costa Rica and the avian movements are fierce. It’s fierce because a procession of kites flock their way through the Caribbean lowlands in groups that number in the hundreds, even thousands. Such a lovely sight. Marbled Godwit.

Costa Rica? Although Cocos Island is halfway between Costa Rica and the Galapagos, we are still talking about hundreds of kilometers of ocean between us and the place of the big tortoises. As the ferry plodded along, small groups of shearwaters lifted off the water to flutter and glide just above the surface.

The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. The first bird in that grouping would be the White-crowned Helmut-shrike. This bird is 3 inches long, lives in the darkest part of the jungle understory of Costa Rica, and never sits still!

When I went to Honduras in 2014, I was advised to use The Birds of Costa Rica by Richard Garrigues and Robert Dean (2014) and The Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America by Steve N.G. It has been a long time between field guides for most of these countries. Howell and Sophie Webb (a classic, but big and published in 1995).

Last Sunday, it was never as obvious as it was with the small group of Phainopepla , Phainopepla nitens. The Black-and-white Phainoptila , Phainoptila melanoxantha from Costa Rica and Panama. Then there is the Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher , Ptilogonys caudatus , living in some of the high mountains of Costa Rica and Panama.

Having mobility issues, I still remember birding from a van along a rather productive dirt road in Costa Rica ( Broad-billed Motmot , Lineated Woodpecker , Cocoa Woodcreeper , etc.), while the rest of the group took a hike. from London was part of my group. My Spanish certainly wasn’t any better.

Think Arizona meets Costa Rica with a Mexican twist. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers. This poorly documented swallow is a breeding endemic to these high mountains.

As the sky darkened and a chill set in, large groups of birds took off in the opposite direction for the interior of the preserve, where they would safely roost for the night. Since that trip, I’ve seen Rose-throated Becard in Costa Rica, but not with the rosy throat. I never saw the bird. Well, maybe a bit of a wing.

This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species. On Seymour Island, my group witnessed a very human-like interaction amongst three boobies , one female and two males.
