Mallards , of course, bring new meaning to the term dabbling duck , what with all those wild mallard hybrids and domestic cross-breeds running around. Even so, hybrids not identifiable after comparison with the images presented here might involve one (or two) of these other teals. Consider the teals. Aren’t hybrid ducks fun?

I discovered very much by accident that questions have been raised by British birders about the accuracy of some of the book’s photographs; this is the to-do at Birdfair I referred to in the beginning of the review. The chapters, however, offer very good introductions to each bird group. Is the bird pictured what the caption says it is?

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.

I knew I would not be seeing the bird in its rosy-breasted breeding plumage, but somehow seeing the bird in all its forms helped crystallize its appearance in my head. or birds that look very different in their breeding and non-breeding plumages (Shorebirds! I studied it. Sadly, I still did not see the bird.

Another question this raises has to do with migration itself. The authors examine migration related traits and address the theoretical problems of massive comparisons across large numbers of physical features and behaviors across many species. Those two questions are not mutually exclusive. Why migrate? And then there is the loon.
