Birding: Special Lockdown Edition

Admittedly, the area to watch birds is fairly limited – the whole compound measures maybe 200 by 100 meters, and a fair share of it is occupied by apartment blocks and parking spaces. Still, seeing a few birds is better than seeing no birds, even though this Shanghai suburb can hardly make a claim to be a hotspot of biodiversity.

Fortunately, some fresh diversions beckon… I can afford to stay inside where it’s toasty and warm this weekend, because I have two editions of the Sibley Guide to compare and contrast (although the word contrast may be a sore point with the newer edition).

New Year, New Birds

While all good birders were out making first submissions on eBird 2015 , I was nursing a sore head and struggled to make it out by mid-afternoon. Technically, my first bird of the year was a Laughing Dove which was rudely awakened from its roost in the hotel garden by the midnight fireworks and crash-landed by the pool.

Pseudonymns for Costa Rican Birds

Some birds are too cool for just one name. Others have names that give us pause because they don’t seem to describe, to convey, what that bird is really all about. And then there are the names that are just too damn long, especially for the size of the bird. Diminutive? More like maybe-an-insect. Nope, an F Bug.
