Bloody Bay Birding

The bay itself is fairly large and sheltered from the elements, and one of the larger rivers draining the Main Ridge Forest Reserve empties into the bay on the northern end. Specifically birds. They seemed to be waiting to capitalize on any bungled attempts to snag a fish by some juvenile Brown Pelicans. Royal Tern.

Bird Counts and Cold Fronts in Costa Rica

That’s where Costa Rica is situated of course and is partly why so many birds live here. It’s par for the course in December, Costa Rica, and unfortunately, often coincides with our annual bird counts. But, keep birding because cold fronts also bring in other stuff. It’s also why 60 degrees f. Just kidding!

Last month we decided to head north to go camping and birding and top up the 2018 Year List. It is now very hot and dry inland and the temperature does not drop much at night, so you go to bed early and get up early like the animals and birds. We were woken by birds at 4am every day, so we were inside our tent early each night!

With only a few days to bird together before we came home we had to ignore the weather and head out wrapped up and hope the promised wet weather would not catch us out! We walked along the coastal trail rather than along the promenade or beach, because that way we were sheltered from the fine drizzle that soon reached us.

Melbourne to Beaumaris along the coast

The Red Wattlebird, Spotted Doves and Common Mynas are the most common birds on this trail. There are a lot of small sheltered bays along the coast and you can choose to walk along the beach or promenade. On the sheltered side of several jetties I came across small groups of up to seven Hoary-headed Grebes bobbing along.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

Last Saturday Grant had to go to Geelong for the day and so I took the chance to go birding for the day while he was hard at work.
