Ducks and grebes paddled around, Anhingas swam beneath the surface, occasionally appearing with a skewered fish. Sure enough, I wondered about their presence as there was ample food available – fish and aquatic invertebrates – but hadn’t seen one up until this particular morning. And closer.

Personally I’ve seen over a hundred species over several birding trips there, the overall species list for the location is approximately 160 – a tally that will only increase. It was admittedly difficult to concentrate on any single bird with trogons calling non-stop. This large and charismatic bird was surely the bird of the trip.

Fortunately, I live in Trinidad and Tobago – a twin-island nation that boasts the second highest density of bird species in the world. Birders who are lucky enough to live near Trinidad’s west coast have been reporting up to two hundred American Flamingos from various locations along the coastline. Brown Pelican.

This sleepy fishing village on the north coast of Trinidad should ring a bell – it boasts the densest nesting population of Leatherback Turtles in the entire western hemisphere. The mature forest deep in the hills is the single best place in the world to catch a glimpse of the critically endangered Trinidad Piping Guan.

Trinidad Colorado is located just a few miles north of the Colorado – New Mexico border, and home to the Trinidad Reservoir. This area also is where I hope to fill in a few target birds, like the newly spilt Woodhouse’s Scrub Jay, Pinyon Jays and Prairie Falcons. This all mixed in with a very nice bunch of birds.
